Lotions generally feel lighter, while creams and balms can provide a more substantial barrier. Check the individual label for age limits, application sites, fragrance, and directions because products within one brand are not identical.

Dry skin occurs when the outer layer does not retain enough water and protective lipids. Air conditioning, hot showers, harsh cleansers, frequent washing, and friction can worsen it. Asteatotic eczema often presents with very dry, inflamed skin crossed by fine cracks, while atopic dermatitis commonly presents with itching and recurring inflamed patches.

Psoriasis may present with thicker, sharply outlined scaly plaques rather than simple diffuse dryness. Moisturizing can reduce scale and discomfort in these conditions, but ongoing inflammation may require condition-specific treatment.

Take brief lukewarm showers, use a gentle cleanser only where needed, and pat the skin dry. Smooth moisturizer on soon afterward, then reapply to areas that become rough or tight during the day. Use clean hands or a pump to limit contamination of products stored in jars.

Select an unfragranced option if perfume tends to trigger irritation, and patch-test unfamiliar formulas on a small area. Keep ordinary body lotion away from the eyes and open skin. If treatment creams are prescribed, ask which goes on first and whether they should be separated in time.

Book a review if dryness is widespread, repeatedly disrupts sleep, forms painful cracks, or remains inflamed despite consistent gentle care. Seek earlier help for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, yellow crusting, fever, blistering, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty after applying a product.
