What should you know about autologous breast fat transfer?

Fat is removed from a donor area by liposuction, prepared and placed into breast tissue through small entry points. The procedure can refine shape or add modest fullness, but the result is influenced by anatomy, available donor fat, healing and how much transferred fat retains a blood supply.

This is a surgical procedure affecting both the collection site and the breasts. Bruising, swelling, soreness and temporary unevenness can occur in both areas. Some transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed, so the settled contour may differ from the early swollen appearance.

Potential concerns include infection, bleeding, fluid collection, firm areas, fat necrosis, oil cysts, altered sensation and asymmetry. Later breast imaging may show changes related to grafted fat; telling the imaging team about the procedure helps them interpret findings.

Choose a surgeon with appropriate breast and fat-grafting experience. Discuss the change you want, donor-site options, scars, anaesthesia, how asymmetry will be handled and the possibility that another procedure may be needed. Your clinician should review health conditions, smoking or nicotine use, previous breast procedures, medicines and supplements.

Follow the surgical team's instructions on medicines, eating, transport, compression garments and activity. Arrange practical help for early recovery and attend scheduled checks. Do not massage treated areas unless your surgeon specifically recommends it.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, worsening pain, pus, fever, a rapidly enlarging breast, unusual drainage or one-sided swelling that is getting worse. New hard areas should also be assessed rather than assumed to be normal healing.

Seek emergency help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting or sudden painful swelling in a leg. These symptoms can signal a serious postoperative problem.

Ask what result your anatomy can reasonably support, where fat will be collected, how breast screening should continue and which findings merit review. Request a clear explanation of recovery restrictions, scar placement, revision planning and who to contact outside clinic hours.
