ATS anti-tetanus protection explained

Passive antibody products supply antibodies made outside your body. They can neutralise circulating tetanus toxin but cannot reverse toxin that has already attached to nerve tissue. The term ATS may refer to an older serum product; current services may use human tetanus immune globulin instead. Ask for the exact product name because indications, precautions and availability can differ.

Passive protection fades and does not train the immune system. Tetanus-containing vaccination provides active protection, so a person offered antibodies may also need vaccination. The choice is not based on the cut's size alone: contamination, depth, damaged tissue, delay in cleaning and the reliability of previous vaccination records all shape the plan.

Clean the injury promptly under running water and place a clean covering over it. Seek same-day clinical advice for a puncture, animal or human bite, wound contaminated with soil or manure, burn, crush injury, retained foreign material or visibly dead tissue. Proper wound cleaning removes material where tetanus spores may remain and is necessary even when an injection is given.

Show the clinician a vaccine record if available rather than relying on memory. Mention immune suppression, bleeding medicines, pregnancy, allergies and any reaction to a previous serum or vaccine. Follow the full vaccination schedule recommended afterward; receiving passive antibodies does not remove the need to develop active protection.

A wound that becomes increasingly red, swollen, painful, drains pus or is accompanied by fever needs clinical review for infection. Call emergency services for jaw tightness, difficulty opening the mouth, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, rigid muscles or painful spasms. Do not wait for the wound to look infected, because tetanus symptoms result from toxin affecting the nervous system.

Request the name of every product given and the reason it was selected. Check whether the injury needs further cleaning, whether active vaccination is also due, when follow-up doses should occur, what local or allergic reactions require attention, and which changes in the wound should bring you back.
