Atrophic scars on the nose

The nose has curved surfaces, visible pores, oil glands, and relatively tight skin in some areas. These features can make a small depression cast a strong shadow and can affect which procedure is suitable.

A true atrophic scar represents missing support below the surface, often after inflammatory acne or chickenpox. An enlarged pore, an open comedone, or a naturally uneven oil-gland surface may resemble a tiny pit but calls for a different approach.

Clinicians assess whether the depression has a sharp edge, rolls into nearby skin, is fixed to deeper tissue, or contains an active blocked pore. Side lighting and gentle skin stretching can help reveal its structure during examination.

Do not squeeze clogged pores or repeatedly press the indentation. Use non-irritating cleansing, manage current acne, and apply sun protection to limit contrast from uneven pigmentation.

Treatment must account for nearby cartilage, vessels, and the thickness of nasal skin. Depending on the scar, a clinician may consider carefully selected resurfacing, microneedling, release of a tether, or another targeted technique. Dermal filler near the nose requires particular anatomical expertise and is not appropriate for every depression.

Book an examination when you are unsure whether a pit is a scar, pore, or active lesion, especially if it keeps crusting, bleeding, enlarging, or failing to heal. Those changes should not be assumed to be ordinary scarring.

Pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge merits timely care because it can signal infection or another inflammatory problem. A sudden change after a cosmetic injection should be reported to the treating clinician promptly, particularly with severe pain, pale or dusky skin, or visual symptoms.

Ask what confirms the diagnosis, whether the scar is tethered, and how nasal anatomy changes the proposed technique. Request a clear explanation of expected texture change, pigment risks for your skin tone, aftercare, and what symptoms after treatment require urgent contact.
