Atopic dermatitis symptoms in dogs: what owners should notice

The paws, face, ears, armpits, groin, and belly are commonly irritated. Some dogs chew their feet, rub their face on furniture, or develop an unpleasant skin odour. Symptoms may come and go with environmental exposures or persist through the year. A veterinarian should confirm the cause because parasites, infection, food reactions, and other skin disorders can look similar.

Canine atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory, allergy-associated skin disorder. A weakened skin barrier and an overactive immune response make the skin itchy and easily irritated. Scratching and licking then damage the surface, allowing yeast or bacteria to overgrow. Darkening or thickening can develop where inflammation has been repeated.

This condition in a dog does not mean that a person in the household will develop eczema, and it is not generally passed from a pet to a person. Arrange a veterinary examination and note when the itching began, which body areas are affected, whether it is seasonal, and any recent changes in food, grooming products, bedding, or environment. Photos taken during a flare can help if the skin looks calmer at the appointment.

Follow the veterinarian's parasite-control, bathing, skin-care, diet, or prescription plan exactly. Prevent vigorous chewing with a suitable protective collar if advised, wash pet bedding as directed, and avoid applying human eczema creams or essential oils: some ingredients are unsafe if a dog licks them.

Contact a veterinarian promptly if the skin is wet, painful, swollen, crusted, bleeding, foul-smelling, or producing discharge, as these findings can accompany infection or self-injury. Sudden facial swelling, breathing difficulty, collapse, or repeated vomiting needs emergency veterinary attention. Rapidly worsening itch, head shaking, ear pain, reduced appetite, or inability to settle also warrants timely assessment.

Ask which other causes of itching need to be excluded, whether the skin or ears show infection, and how treatment will be adjusted during flares. Clarify which shampoo and parasite prevention are appropriate, what changes should trigger a recheck, and whether allergy testing or a supervised diet trial would change management.
