Is atopic dermatitis the same as skin asthma?

The nickname reflects a shared tendency toward allergic inflammation, not asthma occurring in the skin. It should never replace a specific diagnosis because a rash and breathing symptoms require different assessments.

Some people with atopic dermatitis also have asthma, hay fever or food allergy, and these conditions can occur in the same family. Having eczema does not mean that a person currently has asthma or will inevitably develop it. Atopic dermatitis presents with itchy, dry, inflamed skin; asthma can present with wheeze, cough, chest tightness or shortness of breath.

Clinicians assess each set of symptoms on its own merits. Skin examination helps identify eczema and look-alike rashes, while suspected asthma needs a respiratory history and, when appropriate, breathing assessment.

For eczema, use fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, wash gently and follow any prescribed flare plan. Avoid smoke and fragranced sprays if they irritate the skin or breathing, but do not assume every flare has the same trigger.

If you have an asthma action plan, keep following it even when the skin is calm. Eczema creams do not treat airway narrowing, and an asthma inhaler does not treat an eczema patch. Tell the clinician about all medicines, allergies and symptoms so the plans work together.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, inability to speak comfortably, or symptoms that do not respond to the person's prescribed reliever plan. For the skin, prompt assessment is appropriate when redness spreads quickly or there is increasing pain, heat, swelling, pus, fever, weeping crusts or painful clustered blisters.

Ask whether “skin asthma” in your records means confirmed atopic dermatitis and whether the rash could have another cause. Describe any night cough, exercise-related breathlessness or wheeze rather than assuming it is part of eczema. Request separate written instructions for skin flares and breathing symptoms if both diagnoses apply.
