Atopic dermatitis in horses

This page concerns animal health. Human eczema products and dosing instructions should not be applied to a horse unless a veterinarian specifically directs their use.

Affected horses may rub, bite or scratch the skin, leading to broken hairs, bald patches, scales, crusts or thickened areas. The face, mane, tail and body can be involved. A seasonal pattern may suggest exposure to insects or environmental allergens, but appearance and timing alone do not establish atopic dermatitis.

Parasites, insect-bite reactions, fungal or bacterial disease and contact irritation can produce overlapping signs. Veterinary assessment may include a detailed history, close skin examination and targeted tests. Allergy testing may help guide allergen management after competing diagnoses have been considered; it does not by itself prove the cause of an itchy rash.

Record when the itching began, which areas are involved, changes in feed, bedding, turnout or grooming products, and whether stablemates are itchy. Clear photographs can show progression. Reduce obvious rubbing hazards and keep tack and grooming equipment clean without introducing strongly scented products.

Do not start leftover steroids, antibiotics, insecticides or essential oils. Some products can irritate damaged skin, mask diagnostic clues or be unsafe at the wrong dose. Follow the veterinarian's parasite-control, skin-care and medication plan, and discuss competition withdrawal requirements when relevant.

Contact a veterinarian promptly if rubbing is causing open wounds, bleeding or marked swelling, or if the skin becomes hot, painful, wet, foul-smelling or increasingly crusted. Urgent help is also appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, collapse, rapidly spreading hives, fever, poor appetite or unusual dullness. Separate grooming tools until contagious causes have been assessed.

Ask which alternative causes need testing, how to protect damaged skin and how treatment response will be monitored. Clarify every product's application site, schedule and possible adverse effects. If signs recur seasonally, ask which environmental or insect exposures can be reduced without compromising the horse's welfare.
