Managing atopic dermatitis around dogs

Management has two separate aims: repairing the skin barrier and controlling inflammation, while reducing exposures that consistently precede symptoms. Dog dander, saliva, scratches and pollen or dust carried on fur may matter differently for each person. Dry or itchy skin alone cannot identify the trigger, and an allergy test result must be interpreted with the history.

Eczema commonly presents with itch, dryness and inflamed patches. Cracking creates openings in the barrier, while oozing or crusting may point to infection. Colour left after a flare is post-inflammatory change and is addressed mainly by preventing renewed inflammation and rubbing.

Apply fragrance-free emollient consistently and use prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment exactly as directed. After dog contact, wash exposed hands and skin gently, change clothing if it holds saliva or outdoor allergens, and discourage licking. Keep the sleeping area pet-free and clean fabrics without strongly fragranced products. Introduce changes one at a time and record whether the skin improves, so the plan remains workable.

Medical treatment should not be replaced by repeated bathing, harsh antiseptics or unverified allergy products, which may further disrupt the barrier. Decisions about allergy testing or specialist treatment depend on the pattern, severity and response to appropriate eczema care.

Contact a clinician if flares continue despite the agreed plan, sleep is repeatedly disrupted, or treatment causes burning, thinning or another unexpected reaction. Obtain prompt assessment for rapidly worsening redness, pain, warmth, pus, weeping, widespread crusts or fever. Breathing difficulty, faintness, throat tightness, or tongue swelling after dog exposure requires emergency help.

Ask for clear instructions covering flare treatment, maintenance care and signs of infection. Also ask whether the suspected dog exposure fits the timing, what testing could clarify, and which household changes are worth trialling before considering a major decision about the pet.
