At how many weeks is amniocentesis done?

Many diagnostic amniocentesis appointments take place between 15 and 20 weeks. It can also be offered later when a question arises later in pregnancy. Your maternity or fetal medicine team will date the pregnancy and explain the most suitable window.

The procedure removes a small sample of amniotic fluid through the abdomen under ultrasound guidance. Waiting until at least 15 weeks allows enough fluid to be sampled and avoids the additional concerns associated with earlier amniocentesis.

The laboratory test requested affects when results may be available and what they can answer. Amniocentesis is diagnostic for the specific conditions tested; it does not check for every possible health or developmental condition.

Confirm your pregnancy dates, the reason for testing and whether a screening result led to the offer. Ask what the laboratory will test, how results will be communicated and what each possible result could mean.

Follow the clinic's instructions about eating, drinking and bladder preparation. Tell the team your blood group, medicines, allergies and whether you take medicine that affects bleeding. Arrange a quieter schedule afterward if your clinician recommends it.

Contact your maternity unit promptly after amniocentesis if you have fluid leaking from the vagina, vaginal bleeding, fever, chills, worsening or persistent abdominal pain, or regular contractions. Seek urgent care for severe pain, heavy bleeding, feeling faint or difficulty breathing.

Mild cramping can occur after the procedure, but the team should assess symptoms that are strong, continue or worry you. Use the emergency contact instructions provided by your clinic rather than waiting for a routine visit.

Ask why amniocentesis is being offered now, what alternatives apply at your stage of pregnancy, what the procedure can diagnose, and how its risks compare with the benefit of having a definite answer. You can also ask whether genetic counselling would help you consider the possible outcomes.
