At-home syphilis testing

Follow the kit instructions exactly, check its expiry and storage conditions, and use only a regulated service. Some kits are self-read, while others require sending a sample to a laboratory.

Syphilis screening commonly looks for antibodies made after infection. Testing too soon after exposure can give a negative result before those antibodies are detectable, so a negative home test does not exclude a recent infection.

A reactive result is not a final diagnosis. Clinical services use additional blood testing and your health history to determine whether infection is current, previously treated, or whether another explanation needs consideration.

Contact a sexual health clinic or doctor promptly after a reactive, invalid, or unclear result. Bring the kit details and result if available. Do not start leftover antibiotics because the correct medicine, dose, and follow-up depend on clinical assessment.

If the result is negative but exposure was recent, ask when repeat testing is appropriate. Until assessed, avoid sexual contact or use barrier protection, and tell the clinician about symptoms, pregnancy, previous syphilis treatment, and possible exposure to other sexually transmitted infections.

Arrange prompt assessment for a genital, anal, or mouth sore that does not hurt; a new widespread rash; swollen glands; or known contact with someone diagnosed with syphilis. Syphilis can present with these features, but it may also cause no noticeable symptoms.

Seek urgent medical care for new vision or hearing changes, severe headache, weakness, confusion, or other neurological symptoms. Pregnant people with a possible exposure or reactive result should contact maternity or sexual health services without delay.

Ask which confirmatory tests you need, whether the exposure timing affects interpretation, and whether screening for other infections is advisable. If treatment is prescribed, clarify how follow-up testing works and how recent partners can access confidential assessment.
