At-home strep throat tests: results and next steps

Strep throat is a bacterial infection that often presents with sudden throat pain, painful swallowing, fever, red or swollen tonsils, and tender glands in the neck. Cough, hoarseness, and a runny nose more often accompany a viral respiratory infection, although symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause in every person.

A positive home result may support group A strep infection when the symptoms fit. A negative result can occur if the swab misses the tonsils or back of the throat, the test is performed incorrectly, or the amount detected is too low. An invalid control means the result cannot be interpreted and the kit directions should be followed for repeat testing.

Check the expiry information and kit instructions before starting. Avoid touching the tongue, cheeks, or teeth with the swab, and sample the areas specified by the manufacturer. Read the device only within its stated time window. Photograph the result if you plan to discuss it remotely, and keep the packaging so the clinician can identify the test used.

Contact a clinician after a positive result to discuss whether examination, confirmation, or antibiotic treatment is appropriate. Do not use leftover or shared antibiotics. If the result is negative but throat pain, fever, swollen glands, or worsening illness continues, arrange an assessment because another infection or condition may need attention. Fluids, soft foods, warm or cool drinks, and a suitable pain reliever can ease symptoms while you seek advice.

Seek urgent medical care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling because swallowing is impossible, a muffled voice, marked swelling on one side of the throat or neck, severe dehydration, confusion, or rapid worsening. A young child who cannot drink or is unusually drowsy also needs prompt assessment. These warning signs matter regardless of the home-test result.

Ask whether the symptom pattern and home result need a clinic swab, whether tonsillitis or another cause should be considered, and what pain relief is suitable. If antibiotics are prescribed, confirm how to take the full course, what to do after a missed dose, which side effects need advice, and when returning to school or work is appropriate.
