A reactive home result is preliminary and needs confirmation through a healthcare service. A negative result taken too soon after a possible exposure may need repeating at the time specified for that particular test.

Home tests may use oral fluid or a finger-prick blood sample. They look for markers of HIV infection, and those markers take time to become detectable.
