At-home care for dry, damaged hair

Short answer
Gentle washing, regular conditioning, less heat, and careful handling can reduce breakage and improve dry hair's feel.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main goal
- Reduce friction and prevent additional shaft damage
- Conditioner
- Improves slip and temporarily smooths the hair surface
- Damaged ends
- May need trimming because split fibres do not biologically mend
The short answer
Conditioners and masks can smooth the outer cuticle and limit friction, but a split or severely weathered hair shaft cannot biologically heal. Trimming damaged ends and preventing further stress are often more useful than repeatedly applying harsh corrective treatments.
What dryness and damage can reflect
Hair may feel rough, tangle easily, look dull, or snap when its protective cuticle is disrupted. Bleaching, frequent colouring, chemical straightening, hot tools, tight styles, vigorous towel rubbing, sun, pool water, and repeated wet-to-dry cycles can all add stress to the fibre.
Dry lengths do not always mean a dry scalp. Flaking, redness, soreness, or greasy scale can point to a scalp condition, while widespread shedding or breakage close to the roots may need evaluation for an underlying health, nutrition, medication, or hair-care factor.
Build a lower-damage routine
Choose a mild shampoo and concentrate it on the scalp rather than scrubbing the lengths. Apply conditioner after washing, focusing on mid-lengths and ends; a leave-in conditioner can add slip before detangling. Work through knots from the ends upward with fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
Blot with a soft towel instead of rubbing. Let hair partly air-dry, use the lowest comfortable heat setting, keep hot tools moving, and space out bleaching or chemical services. Loosen hairstyles that pull at the hairline. A small amount of hair oil can reduce friction and improve shine, although it does not restore the internal structure of a broken shaft.
When home care is not enough
See a dermatologist if breakage or shedding begins suddenly, creates visible thinning or patches, continues despite gentler care, or comes with scalp pain, marked itching, redness, crusting, pustules, or scarring. Seek timely advice if hair changes follow a new medicine, restrictive diet, recent illness, or chemical burn.
A stylist can help identify weathered ends and adjust cutting or processing, but scalp inflammation and unexplained hair loss require medical assessment. Stop any product that causes burning, swelling, blistering, or a spreading rash and rinse it away promptly.
Useful questions at an appointment
Describe whether hairs are shedding from the root or snapping along the shaft, and bring a list of recent chemical services, medicines, supplements, and diet changes. Ask whether your scalp shows inflammation, whether testing is appropriate, and which ingredients or styling practices to pause while the cause is assessed.

Questions people ask
Can a hair mask repair split ends?
A mask may temporarily smooth and coat split fibres, but it cannot fuse a split shaft back into healthy hair. Trimming removes the damaged end.
Should I stop shampooing dry hair?
Not necessarily. Use a gentle product as needed for the scalp, avoid rough scrubbing, and condition the lengths after washing.
Is hair oil a moisturiser?
Oil can coat the shaft, improve shine, and reduce friction. It does not add living tissue or reverse structural damage inside the fibre.
