At-home food intolerance tests: making sense of the options

Short answer
Many at-home food intolerance panels do not establish which food is causing symptoms and may prompt unnecessary dietary restriction.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Digestive symptoms may vary with the amount of a food component eaten
- Helpful record
- Meals, portions, timing, bowel pattern and medicines
- Diet safety
- Avoid broad or prolonged exclusions without professional guidance
The short answer
The most useful starting point is often a detailed food-and-symptom record followed by a structured review with a doctor or dietitian. Testing should be chosen for the suspected mechanism rather than applied as a broad panel.
What food intolerance means
Food intolerance usually refers to difficulty digesting or processing a food component. It can cause bloating, wind, abdominal discomfort or diarrhoea, often in relation to the amount eaten. Food allergy is different: it involves the immune system and may cause hives, swelling, wheeze or a rapid severe reaction.
Some mail-order panels measure IgG antibodies to many foods. Exposure to a food can produce these antibodies without showing intolerance, so a long list of positive results may not explain the symptoms. Other problems, including coeliac disease, bowel disorders or medication effects, can resemble an intolerance.
A more useful way to investigate symptoms
Record meals, ingredients, portion size, symptom type, onset, bowel pattern and relevant medicines. Bring the diary and any test report to a clinician or dietitian. They can decide whether targeted testing, a time-limited elimination, or another investigation fits the pattern.
Remove one suspected component only under a clear plan, then review symptoms before changing anything else. Multiple simultaneous exclusions make the trigger harder to identify and can reduce fibre, calcium, protein or other nutrients. Do not remove gluten before assessment if coeliac disease is a possibility, because doing so can affect subsequent testing.
Symptoms that need medical attention
Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, collapse, or rapidly spreading hives with other symptoms; these features suggest an allergic reaction rather than a simple intolerance. Do not rely on an intolerance kit during an acute reaction.
Book a medical review for blood in the stool, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, fever, unexplained weight loss, night-time symptoms, dehydration, anaemia, poor growth in a child, or symptoms that continue despite avoiding the suspected food.
What to clarify before changing your diet
Ask which diagnosis fits your pattern, whether a targeted breath, blood or stool test is appropriate, and how to perform any elimination and reintroduction safely. A dietitian can also identify nutritionally equivalent foods and help prevent an overly narrow diet.

Questions people ask
Is food intolerance the same as food allergy?
No. Intolerance generally involves digestion or processing, while allergy involves the immune system and can cause a rapid serious reaction.
What does a long list of IgG-positive foods mean?
It may mainly reflect foods you have eaten rather than foods that cause symptoms. The list should not be used alone to diagnose intolerance or design a restrictive diet.
Can I start an elimination diet on my own?
A brief, focused plan may sometimes help, but professional guidance is safer when several foods are suspected, symptoms are persistent, or nutrition could be affected.
