Home devices are often handheld Dopplers that turn movement in the uterus into an audible or displayed signal. Finding a signal can be reassuring, but the reading may come from your own pulse, the placenta, or another source, especially when the device is used without training.

A sound or number from a home monitor is only one piece of information. It does not show oxygen supply, growth, movement, contractions, or whether the placenta is working normally. A monitor can also fail to find a signal when the baby is healthy because of gestational age, fetal position, movement, or the device's position.

Clinicians interpret fetal heart activity alongside your stage of pregnancy, symptoms, fetal movements, and other examination findings. Tests such as non-stress testing or cardiotocography are performed and interpreted in a clinical setting when indicated.

Do not use a home device to check whether you need care, and do not delay calling your maternity team because you hear a heartbeat. If you choose to use one, follow the manufacturer's instructions, avoid pressing hard, and treat an uncertain or absent signal as a reason to seek advice rather than as a diagnosis.

Pay attention to the care plan provided by your obstetric or midwifery team, including how to monitor fetal movements if that has been discussed. Keep routine antenatal appointments even when home readings seem normal.

Contact your maternity unit or clinician promptly if your baby's movements are reduced or changed from the pattern you know, if you cannot find a signal and are worried, or if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, painful regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, or feel acutely unwell.
