Asymmetrical IUGR explained

IUGR is also called fetal growth restriction. The pattern is identified from ultrasound measurements and trends, not from the pregnant person's bump size or a single measurement alone.

When placental transfer of oxygen and nutrients is limited, the fetus may redistribute blood flow toward the brain and heart. Abdominal growth, which reflects liver size and fat storage, can then lag more than head growth. This pattern guides assessment but does not by itself identify the cause or predict an individual outcome.

Clinicians consider gestational age, growth over time, amniotic fluid and blood-flow measurements together. They may also review blood pressure, urine findings, medical conditions, medicines and signs of placental disease.

Attend every maternity and ultrasound appointment because the direction of growth over time matters. Follow the maternity team's plan for growth scans, Doppler blood-flow checks, amniotic-fluid assessment and fetal heart monitoring. There is no food, supplement or bed-rest routine that should replace this surveillance.

Notice your baby's usual movement pattern each day. If growth or monitoring becomes concerning, the team balances the benefit of continuing pregnancy against the benefit of birth and may discuss induction or caesarean birth. The timing depends on the complete clinical picture rather than the word asymmetrical alone.

Call your maternity unit immediately if your baby is moving less than usual or the movement pattern changes; do not wait for the next day or rely on a home heartbeat device. Urgent assessment is also needed for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, visual changes, pain beneath the ribs, sudden marked swelling, breathlessness or feeling very unwell.

Ask which measurements are small, whether growth has changed between scans, what the Doppler and fluid findings show, and how often monitoring is needed. It is also useful to ask what findings would change the birth timing, whether steroids for fetal lung preparation might be discussed, and where to attend if movements decrease.
