Aspiration for a knee effusion

A needle is placed into the joint using sterile technique. Relief may be temporary if the condition producing the effusion remains active, so diagnosis and follow-up matter as much as drainage.

A knee effusion is fluid collected within the joint, often called water on the knee. Injury, osteoarthritis, crystal arthritis, inflammatory disease, bleeding, and infection can each produce an effusion. The timing, trauma history, warmth, movement restriction, and fluid analysis help narrow the cause.

Aspiration can reveal clear, cloudy, or blood-stained fluid. Laboratory testing may examine cells, bacteria, and crystals. The fluid's appearance is informative but is not a diagnosis by itself, and imaging or further examination may still be needed for ligament or meniscus injury.

Follow the specific advice given for weight bearing and exercise because the underlying cause changes what is safe. Keep the puncture dressing dry for the advised period, avoid soaking the site while it is open, and do not massage a newly aspirated knee.

If a cold pack is recommended, wrap it to protect the skin. Note whether the knee refills, locks, gives way, or remains unable to straighten. Bring those details to follow-up, along with questions about fluid results and any imaging plan.

A hot, severely painful knee with fever, chills, spreading redness, or sudden inability to bear weight needs urgent medical assessment. The urgency comes from the possibility of infection or serious injury, not from the size of the effusion alone.

Urgent help is also appropriate after major trauma, for uncontrolled bleeding, or if the foot becomes cold, blue, numb, or weak. Contact the treating clinician promptly when drainage appears at the needle site or swelling and pain escalate after initial improvement.

Discuss the leading explanation for the effusion, which fluid tests are pending, and whether imaging could identify structural damage. Ask what level of walking, work, and physiotherapy is suitable before the knee has a confirmed diagnosis.
