Knee joint fluid aspiration explained

Short answer
Knee aspiration uses a sterile needle to remove excess joint fluid for symptom relief, diagnostic testing, or both.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Removing fluid may ease tightness and make bending more comfortable. Testing can look for infection, crystals, blood, or inflammatory changes, but the findings must be considered with the examination and medical history.
Why clinicians aspirate knee fluid
An effusion means extra fluid has collected inside the knee joint. Causes include injury, arthritis, crystal inflammation, and infection. A clinician cleans the skin, may apply local anaesthetic, and inserts a needle into the joint space to draw fluid into a syringe.
The amount removed does not by itself establish the cause. Colour, clarity, cell analysis, crystal examination, and culture may provide different pieces of information. If infection is suspected, medical treatment should not be delayed while waiting for every result.
Before and after the procedure
Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding disorders, allergies, recent antibiotics, skin infection near the knee, and any joint replacement. These details can affect how aspiration is planned and how test results are interpreted.
Afterward, keep the small dressing clean, limit strenuous loading for the period advised, and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth if recommended. Mild local tenderness can occur. Record whether swelling, movement, or pain improves, and return for results or reassessment as arranged.
Symptoms that need prompt attention
Get urgent medical assessment for fever with a hot, very painful knee, rapidly worsening swelling, spreading redness, pus, or an inability to bear weight. Infection inside a joint requires rapid evaluation even when aspiration was recently performed.
Persistent bleeding, a cold or discoloured foot, new numbness, or new weakness also warrants urgent care. Contact the treating service if the knee refills quickly or pain is clearly worsening rather than settling.
Questions to ask about the sample
Ask which tests were ordered, how you will receive the results, and whether medicines could affect them. Clarify the suspected cause, the plan if fluid returns, and which movement or weight-bearing limits apply to your knee.

Questions people ask
Will knee aspiration stop the swelling from returning?
Not necessarily. Aspiration removes fluid present at that moment, while recurrence depends on whether the injury, inflammation, crystal disease, or other cause is controlled.
Can knee fluid show gout or pseudogout?
Fluid microscopy can identify characteristic crystals and help distinguish crystal arthritis from other causes, although infection may still need to be considered.
Is a Baker's cyst drained through knee aspiration?
A Baker's cyst sits behind the knee and is related to joint fluid, but treatment depends on its location, symptoms, and the underlying knee problem. The clinician will decide which area, if any, should be aspirated.
