Asherman syndrome and pregnancy

Pregnancy can still occur. Individual prospects depend on where the adhesions are, how much healthy lining remains, whether treatment restores the cavity, and whether other fertility factors are present.

Scar tissue may limit space within the uterus, obstruct the route into the cavity, or reduce receptive endometrium. This can interfere with implantation and may be associated with miscarriage or problems involving where and how the placenta attaches.

Absent or very light periods can accompany Asherman syndrome, but bleeding patterns do not show how a future pregnancy will progress. Direct evaluation of the cavity gives the care team more useful information for planning.

Arrange a pre-pregnancy consultation with a gynaecologist if Asherman syndrome is known or suspected. Bring details of previous uterine procedures, pregnancies, menstrual changes, imaging, and fertility treatment. Hysteroscopy may be offered to define and treat adhesions before trying to conceive.

After treatment, follow the advised timing for reassessment and attempts at pregnancy. Once pregnant, tell the maternity team about the diagnosis and any hysteroscopic surgery so they can plan ultrasound review and watch placental development appropriately.

Contact a clinician promptly for bleeding or persistent pain during pregnancy. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe one-sided or worsening abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, collapse, fever, or fluid leaking from the vagina.

Later in pregnancy, reduced fetal movement, painful regular tightenings, or a severe headache with visual changes also requires urgent maternity advice. These warning signs guide urgency regardless of whether adhesions are the cause.
