Armpit peeling that looks like sunburn

Because the armpit is usually covered, a red, tender, peeling patch there may follow deodorant, shaving, friction, heat or moisture. Its resemblance to sunburn describes how it looks; it does not establish the cause.

A reaction beginning after a new deodorant, wash, laundry product or hair-removal method supports contact irritation or allergy. Burning can occur with irritation, while strong itch may accompany allergy or eczema. Moisture and rubbing can inflame opposing skin surfaces, and damaged skin may then become infected.

True sunburn can present with redness, warmth, tenderness and later peeling after ultraviolet exposure, but an isolated covered armpit is an unusual location. Blisters, raw areas, a sharply expanding border or discharge require closer attention regardless of the suspected trigger.

Stop recently introduced products and pause shaving until the surface has healed. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry and choose loose clothing that does not rub. A bland fragrance-free emollient may soothe dry, unbroken skin; avoid acids, scrubs, essential oils and antiseptics unless prescribed.

Do not start a steroid cream simply because the area is red. Steroids can alter some infections, and armpit skin absorbs medication readily, so a pharmacist or clinician should confirm whether one is appropriate and explain how to use it.

Book a clinical review when the patch fails to improve after avoiding suspected triggers, keeps returning, affects both armpits, or develops significant itch or cracking. Obtain prompt care for extensive blistering, severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, swelling, pus, fever or feeling generally unwell.

Ask whether the distribution fits contact dermatitis, fold irritation or infection, and whether a swab or patch testing would help. Bring the ingredient lists of products used in the area and ask which cleanser, moisturiser and hair-removal approach are least likely to aggravate your skin.
