What should you know about an armpit fibroadenoma?

An armpit lump should not be labelled a fibroadenoma by touch alone. Enlarged lymph nodes, cysts, inflamed sweat glands, lipomas and other breast or skin conditions can occur there, so a new or changing lump warrants a clinical assessment.

Breast tissue extends upward and outward toward the armpit. Fibroadenomas are often smooth, firm, clearly outlined and mobile under the skin, but these features are not enough to establish the diagnosis. Tenderness and size may also change with hormonal shifts.

A clinician will ask when the lump appeared, whether it changes, and whether there are breast, skin or general symptoms. Examination usually includes both breasts and the lymph-node areas. Ultrasound can show whether a lump is solid or fluid-filled and help guide the next step.

Book a breast assessment rather than repeatedly pressing the lump. Note its location, when you first noticed it, any recent infection or vaccination, and whether it changes with the menstrual cycle. Mention nipple changes, previous breast lumps and relevant family history.

Depending on age, examination and imaging findings, the clinician may recommend observation, follow-up imaging or a needle biopsy. A biopsy samples tissue to clarify uncertain findings. Excision may be discussed if a confirmed fibroadenoma grows, causes symptoms or remains uncertain, but many do not require removal.

Arrange prompt review for any new armpit or breast lump, particularly one that enlarges, feels fixed or hard, or persists. Skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody nipple discharge, breast shape change or swelling of the arm also needs timely breast assessment.

Seek urgent medical care if the area becomes rapidly red, hot and very painful, especially with fever or feeling unwell, because an abscess or spreading infection may need treatment. Sudden arm swelling or breathing difficulty also requires urgent evaluation.

Ask which tissue the lump seems to arise from, what imaging can clarify, and whether a biopsy is advised. If fibroadenoma is confirmed, discuss what changes should trigger reassessment, whether follow-up is needed, and the trade-offs between observation and excision.
