Armpit chemical peels: uses, precautions and aftercare

A peel does not remove an underlying cause such as friction, irritation from deodorant, recurrent inflammation or a medical skin condition. Applying a strong facial peel at home can cause a chemical burn and make discoloration more noticeable.

Chemical peeling agents loosen connections between surface skin cells so they shed more evenly. Glycolic acid is one possible ingredient, but concentration, acidity, contact time and the condition of the skin all influence the response. Underarm warmth, moisture and rubbing can intensify irritation.

Darkening after shaving, rashes or inflamed bumps may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Treating the trigger matters because repeated irritation can create new pigment even while a peel removes older surface cells. A clinician should first assess velvety thickening, persistent itch, scaling, sores or an unexplained colour change.

Choose a qualified clinician who examines the area and asks about sensitive skin, eczema, allergies, medicines, previous pigment changes and current products. Do not apply a peel to broken, freshly shaved, waxed, infected or actively inflamed skin. Follow the clinician's instructions about pausing exfoliants and hair removal.

After treatment, cleanse without scrubbing, use the recommended bland moisturiser, reduce friction and wait for the skin to recover before shaving or restarting deodorant and active products. Do not pull peeling skin. Protect any exposed underarm skin from sunlight, since inflammation and ultraviolet exposure can worsen uneven pigment.

Contact the treating clinic if burning continues, pain is increasing, blisters form, skin becomes raw, or swelling and discoloration are worsening instead of settling. Early advice can limit further exposure and guide wound care; do not try to neutralise a reaction with another acid or an improvised household mixture.

Seek prompt medical attention for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever or rapidly increasing tenderness, which can accompany infection. Breathing difficulty, faintness, widespread hives, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue after a product requires urgent help.

Ask what is causing the colour or texture change, whether a peel suits your skin, which ingredient and depth are proposed, how irritation will be managed, and what result is realistic. Also discuss your usual shaving method, deodorant, exfoliants and any past tendency to develop dark marks after a rash or procedure.
