Rash with bumps on the arms: what the pattern can show

Dry itchy patches, sweat-related pinpoints, scaly plaques, rings, burrows, and medicine-related eruptions call for different care. Avoid treating every raised rash as acne.

Atopic dermatitis often presents with strong itch, dryness, and inflamed patches. Contact dermatitis presents where skin encounters a trigger and may burn or itch. Heat rash commonly produces prickly small bumps in sweaty or covered areas.

Ringworm can present as an enlarging scaly ring, while psoriasis may produce clearly edged scaly plaques. Scabies commonly causes intense night-time itch and can affect wrists or household contacts. Drug rash may be widespread and begin after a new medicine. Fold-centred irritation suggests a different pattern from isolated bumps on exposed arm skin.

Use lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then apply a simple moisturiser if the skin is dry and unbroken. Keep nails short, use a cool compress for itch, and choose sleeves that do not rub.

Set aside newly introduced lotions, detergents, jewellery, or protective gear touching the area. Record changes with photographs and note new medicines, illness, heat, travel, animal contact, and whether anyone nearby is itchy. Do not share towels when a transmissible cause is possible.

See a clinician when the rash spreads, persists, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or develops pain, warmth, pus, crusting, or significant swelling. Mention any medicine started before the eruption and do not stop a prescribed medicine unless a clinician advises it, except while obtaining emergency help for a severe reaction.

Emergency assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, faintness, extensive peeling or blistering, severe skin pain, purple marks that do not blanch, high fever with marked illness, or sores involving the mouth, eyes, or genitals.

Ask whether the border, scale, or distribution points to a specific condition; whether scraping, swabbing, or allergy evaluation is useful; and which skin products to continue. Bring photographs showing how the bumps evolved before treatment changed their appearance.
