What should you know about arm pit heat rash?

It may look like small red or skin-coloured bumps and can feel prickly, itchy, or mildly sore. Because several skin problems can affect the underarm, changes that persist or worsen deserve a clinical assessment.

Heat rash, also called miliaria or prickly heat, develops when sweat ducts become blocked and sweat remains within the skin. The underarm is particularly prone because it is warm, folded, and often covered by clothing. Friction, humid weather, exercise, and heavy or occlusive products can add to the irritation.

Not every underarm rash is heat rash. Irritation from deodorant or shaving, inflamed hair follicles, fungal or bacterial infection, and eczema can cause a similar appearance. Odour, drainage, deep tender lumps, scaling, or a sharply defined border may point toward another cause and should be described to a clinician.

Move to a cooler setting, allow air to reach the underarm, and change out of damp clothing. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat rather than rub, and choose loose, breathable fabric. A cool compress can ease prickling without scraping the skin.

Pause shaving and any deodorant, fragrance, oil, or thick cream that stings or seems to trap heat. Avoid squeezing the bumps. If itching is troublesome, a pharmacist or doctor can help select a suitable treatment after considering your age, skin condition, pregnancy status, and whether infection is possible.

Arrange medical care if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, not settling after cooling measures, or causing enough discomfort to disturb sleep or normal activity. Seek prompt assessment for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, open skin, red streaks, fever, or feeling unwell, as these features can occur with infection.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat, especially after applying a new product or taking medicine. Babies, people with reduced immunity, and anyone unable to cool down safely may need earlier evaluation.

Ask whether the pattern fits heat rash or another underarm condition, which products should be stopped, and whether a prescribed cream is appropriate. Mention recent shaving, exercise, heat exposure, new deodorants, medicines, drainage, odour, and previous episodes; these details help distinguish blocked sweat ducts from contact irritation or infection.
