What should you know about Arimidex and tamoxifen together?

If both names appear on your medicine list, confirm which one is active before taking the next dose; do not stop either medicine on your own.

Arimidex is the brand name for anastrozole, an aromatase inhibitor that lowers oestrogen production. Tamoxifen blocks oestrogen signalling in breast tissue. Menopausal status, diagnosis, previous therapy, side effects and recurrence risk help determine which medicine fits a particular stage of care.

A planned switch can leave both medicines visible in an electronic record even when they are not meant to overlap. Written start and stop dates resolve that ambiguity.

Check the label, generic name and current oncology instructions. Tell the prescribing team about non-prescription medicines, supplements, pregnancy possibility, previous blood clots, bone health concerns and troublesome joint pain or hot flushes.

Contact the treating team promptly about unexpected vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the skin or eyes, a new severe rash, or side effects that prevent normal activity or regular dosing.
