What should you know about ARID1A immunohistochemistry?

The pathologist compares tumour cells with normal cells in the same section, which act as an internal staining control.

Retained expression means the tumour nuclei show the protein. Loss means tumour nuclei lack staining while nearby non-tumour cells stain as expected; this pattern can support disruption of the ARID1A pathway in the right setting.

Patchy, weak or uninterpretable staining may reflect tumour biology, limited viable tissue or technical factors. Immunohistochemistry measures protein expression, whereas sequencing examines DNA, so the two approaches answer related but different questions.

Look for the final diagnosis and comment section of the pathology report. ARID1A status may be considered with tumour location, microscopic pattern and other markers, rather than used as an isolated label.

Ask whether the result is clearly retained or lost, whether internal controls worked and whether genomic testing is relevant to the clinical question. A staining result should not prompt a treatment change without the oncology team's integrated assessment.

ARID1A staining happens after tissue collection and does not create symptoms. Following a biopsy, report increasing pain, redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, fever or persistent bleeding to the treating team without delay.

Emergency assessment is appropriate for heavy bleeding, collapse, severe shortness of breath or sudden intense pain after the sampling procedure.

Clarify why ARID1A staining was ordered, how it contributed to the diagnosis, whether the sample was sufficient, whether other tumour tests are pending and whether the finding has any direct effect on the current care plan.
