Short answer

Arch pain during running often reflects an irritated or overloaded foot structure, so reduce the provoking activity and check footwear, training changes and recovery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Useful clue
Note where the pain starts, when it appears in a run and how it feels the next morning.
First adjustment
Reduce the running load that triggers pain while keeping comfortable daily movement.
Footwear check
Look for worn soles, loss of cushioning or a recent change in shoe style.

What the pain may mean

The arch absorbs and transfers load with every stride. Pain can follow a sudden increase in distance, pace, hills or running frequency, especially when recovery has been limited. Worn shoes, a different running surface, calf tightness or altered foot mechanics may also concentrate strain through the midfoot and sole.

The timing and location provide useful clues. Plantar fasciitis can present with pain near the inner heel and arch that is noticeable on the first steps after rest. Flat feet may be accompanied by arch fatigue or soreness during prolonged weight-bearing, although foot shape alone does not establish the cause.

What to do now

Pause or shorten runs that reproduce the pain rather than forcing the same workload. Choose comfortable, supportive shoes, avoid changing several training variables at once, and use low-impact exercise only if it remains comfortable. Gentle calf and sole mobility may help when it does not increase symptoms.

When symptoms settle, rebuild running gradually and monitor how the foot feels during the run and the following morning. Persistent pain deserves an assessment of tenderness, strength, gait, footwear and training pattern. Custom orthotics may help selected people after an examination identifies a mechanical reason for them; they are not automatically required for every sore arch.

When to seek medical care

Arrange a clinical review if pain keeps returning, worsens despite reduced running, affects normal walking, or is focused over one bony spot. Seek urgent care after a significant injury if you cannot bear weight, the foot looks deformed, or swelling and bruising develop quickly. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for a hot, red foot, an open wound, spreading numbness, new weakness, fever, or a foot that becomes pale or cold.

Questions for your clinician

Ask which structure appears tender, whether your symptoms suggest a soft-tissue or bone problem, and whether imaging would change management. Discuss which training changes are safest, what footwear features fit your examination, and what signs should stop your return-to-running plan.

Questions people ask

Can I keep running with mild arch pain?

Do not continue at the same load if pain builds, changes your stride or remains worse afterward. A shorter, easier run may be reasonable only when it stays comfortable and does not cause a later flare.

Do I need arch supports for running pain?

Not necessarily. Shoe support or an orthotic may help when an examination identifies a suitable mechanical target, but training load, calf function and the specific painful structure also need consideration.

Why does my arch hurt at the start of a run?

Tissues may feel stiff after rest and react when loading begins. Pain that eases briefly but returns later still warrants a reduction in load and assessment if it persists.
