The phrase usually describes a serum or cream rather than a single medical substance. It should not be confused with hyaluronic acid prepared for injection into a joint; a cosmetic topical product is not sterile or formulated for injection.

Arbutin is used in skincare to reduce the appearance of dark marks by limiting a step involved in pigment production. Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water at the skin surface, which can make dry skin feel more comfortable and look temporarily plumper. Hydration does not itself remove pigment, so each ingredient has a separate purpose in the combination.

Product labels matter because concentration, supporting ingredients and directions vary. Names such as alpha-arbutin may appear on cosmetic packaging.
