Aquaphor for diaper rash: what caregivers should know

A petrolatum-based ointment separates irritated skin from urine, stool, and rubbing while the surface recovers. It is most useful when the rash is mild and linked to prolonged wetness or friction. The appearance and location of the rash matter because infections require different care.

Irritant diaper rash commonly affects the areas that touch the diaper, while the deeper skin folds may be less involved. A bright red rash extending into folds, sometimes with smaller spots beyond its edge, can occur with yeast overgrowth. Blisters, honey-coloured crust, pus, or rapidly worsening raw skin raise concern for another problem.

Teething is often blamed, but stool frequency, recent diarrhoea, antibiotics, fragranced wipes, tight diapers, and new skin products provide more useful clues. Aquaphor cannot confirm the cause from appearance alone.

Change wet or soiled diapers promptly. Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth or an unscented wipe, pat rather than rub, and allow the skin to air-dry. Apply a visible protective layer of ointment before putting on a clean, comfortably fitted diaper.

At the next change, remove stool and obvious soiling without scrubbing away every trace of barrier. Avoid talcum powder, fragranced products, and topical medicines not recommended for the baby. If Aquaphor appears to increase redness or causes hives, wash it off gently and stop using it.

Get medical advice if the rash is severe, spreading, unusually painful, blistered, bleeding, oozing, or accompanied by fever or poor feeding. Assessment is also sensible when careful barrier care is not producing improvement or the rash keeps returning.

Seek prompt help for a newborn with a significant rash or for any baby who seems unwell. A clinician may identify yeast, bacteria, eczema, or a contact reaction and select treatment that is appropriate for the child's age and skin.

Ask whether the distribution fits irritant dermatitis or yeast, which cleanser and barrier ingredients suit the baby, and how any prescribed cream should be layered with Aquaphor. Bring a list of recent antibiotics, wipes, diapers, soaps, and home treatments.
