What should you know about aquaphor for cheilitis?

A bland barrier can support healing when dryness, weather exposure or lip licking has damaged the surface. Cheilitis can also result from contact allergy, irritation, infection, sun damage or inflammation at the mouth corners. Ongoing or recurrent symptoms deserve an assessment rather than repeated changes of lip balm.

Aquaphor is an occlusive ointment: it forms a surface film that limits water loss and shields cracks from saliva and friction. It contains lanolin alcohol, which can trigger contact allergy in some people, particularly on already inflamed skin.

Burning or scaling across the lip may follow fragranced balms, flavourings, cosmetics, toothpaste or dental products. Cracks mainly at the corners can have different contributors from irritation across the whole lip. Thick scale, a persistent rough patch or repeated bleeding calls for direct examination.

Apply a small amount to clean lips with clean hands, including after eating or drinking if the barrier has worn away. Avoid licking, biting or peeling loose skin. Pause fragranced, flavoured, plumping and exfoliating lip products while the area settles.

If Aquaphor causes more burning, itch, redness or swelling, stop it and use no new products until you can identify a simpler alternative with a clinician or pharmacist. Do not use a borrowed steroid, antifungal or antibiotic cream on the lips; treatment should match the location and suspected cause.

Arrange an appointment if inflammation persists despite avoiding irritants, keeps returning, spreads onto nearby skin, or includes crusting, pus, painful corner cracks, blisters, a firm area or a sore that does not heal. Mention new cosmetics, dental work, medicines and habitual lip licking.

Get urgent help for rapid swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, faintness or widespread hives. Rapidly increasing redness with fever, severe pain or facial swelling also needs prompt medical care.

Ask whether the pattern suggests irritation, contact allergy, infection, sun-related change or another inflammatory condition. Discuss whether patch testing or a swab would help, which ingredients to avoid, whether plain petrolatum is preferable, and exactly where and how long any prescribed medicine should be applied.
