What should you know about aquaphor and cradle cap?

A thin layer can help loosen adherent flakes before washing. It does not treat every cause of a scaly infant scalp, and a thick layer left behind may make the hair greasy or trap more scale. Never pick firmly at attached flakes or scratch the skin.

Cradle cap commonly presents with greasy or dry-looking scales on an infant’s scalp, sometimes with mild redness. An occlusive ointment does not remove the underlying tendency, but it can soften compact scale so that it lifts with less friction.

Aquaphor contains ingredients beyond plain petrolatum, including lanolin alcohol. Stop using it if the application area becomes more red, itchy, swollen or blistered, as these changes can indicate irritation or contact allergy. Keep any ointment away from the eyes, nostrils and mouth.

Apply a small amount only to the scaly scalp and allow it to soften the flakes briefly. Use fingertips or a soft infant brush without scraping, then wash with a mild baby shampoo and rinse well. Support the baby securely and avoid getting slippery ointment near the face.

If the scale persists, spreads or repeatedly returns, a paediatrician can confirm the diagnosis. Do not apply adult dandruff products, essential oils, medicated creams or antifungal products to a baby unless a clinician has recommended the specific product and explained where to use it.

Arrange medical review if the scalp is very inflamed, painful, cracked, bleeding, oozing, foul-smelling or developing pus-filled bumps. A rapidly spreading rash, significant swelling, fever, poor feeding or unusual sleepiness also warrants prompt assessment.

Seek urgent help for breathing trouble or swelling of the face, lips or tongue after applying a product. If a rash extends beyond the scalp or the baby seems distressed, pause home treatments until the skin has been examined.

Ask whether the appearance is cradle cap or another scalp condition, how often the hair should be washed, and whether an ointment is suitable for your baby’s skin. If medicated treatment is suggested, confirm the amount, exact location, application method and signs that mean it should be stopped.
