Applying hyaluronic acid safely

Check the label and intended route before use. A cosmetic serum is not sterile injection material, and an injectable product is not suitable for self-administration.

Topical hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant, helping the outer skin hold water. It can support a hydrated feel but does not enter a joint or treat the structural cause of joint pain.

In orthopedics, hyaluronic acid may be injected into a joint for selected people with joint symptoms. The decision depends on the diagnosis, examination, previous treatments, medicines, allergies, skin condition near the injection site, and the clinician's discussion of likely benefits and limitations.

For a skin product, apply it as directed to clean skin and stop if irritation develops. Avoid placing a cosmetic formula into broken skin, the eyes, or a joint. Introducing a non-sterile product beneath the skin can cause infection or tissue injury.

For joint symptoms, obtain a diagnosis before considering an injection. Tell the treating clinician about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, current infection, pregnancy, and previous reactions to injections. Follow the specific aftercare instructions provided for the joint and product used.

Get urgent help for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, faintness, or another sign of a severe allergic reaction. After a joint injection, seek prompt medical assessment for increasing redness, heat, swelling, severe pain, fever, drainage, or inability to use the limb.

Mild skin stinging may settle after a topical product is washed off, but persistent rash, blistering, eye exposure with ongoing discomfort, or worsening swelling should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
