Apple Watch readings and heart palpitations

Short answer
An Apple Watch may record your pulse or rhythm during palpitations, but its alerts cannot identify every cause or replace a medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can an Apple Watch explain palpitations?
A recording made while symptoms are happening can be useful to a clinician. A normal watch result does not rule out an intermittent rhythm problem, and an unusual result may reflect movement, poor skin contact, or another source of interference.
What the readings may mean
Palpitations can feel like racing, pounding, fluttering, skipped beats, or an unexpectedly forceful heartbeat. Exercise, caffeine, stress, fever, dehydration, low blood sugar, anaemia, thyroid problems, medicines, and heart rhythm disorders can all be associated with this sensation.
Some watch models can produce a single-lead rhythm tracing and may flag an irregular rhythm. Such a label is a screening prompt, not a diagnosis. Atrial fibrillation often presents with an irregular pulse and palpitations, but confirmation requires clinical interpretation and sometimes further monitoring.
Capture useful details safely
If you feel well enough, sit still, relax your arm, make sure the watch fits snugly, and record a tracing if your model supports it. Save the result rather than repeatedly checking. Note what the sensation felt like, what you were doing, and whether you had dizziness, breathlessness, chest discomfort, or faintness.
Arrange a GP appointment when episodes recur, last longer, disturb daily activity, or follow a medication change. Bring exported recordings and a list of medicines, supplements, caffeine intake, and any family history of heart rhythm problems.
When palpitations need urgent care
Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pain or pressure, severe shortness of breath, fainting, marked weakness, confusion, or symptoms suggesting a stroke such as facial droop, arm weakness, or trouble speaking. Do not delay for another watch reading.
Seek prompt medical advice if a new irregular or very fast pulse persists at rest, especially with dizziness or breathlessness. The symptoms determine urgency even when the watch shows no alert.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the saved tracing is clear enough to interpret, whether an examination or longer heart monitor is appropriate, and whether blood tests could check for anaemia, thyroid disturbance, or other contributors. Mention exactly when symptoms began and what makes them start or stop.

Questions people ask
Can an Apple Watch miss an abnormal heart rhythm?
Yes. An intermittent rhythm may stop before recording, and a wearable has technical and detection limits. Persistent or concerning symptoms still need medical assessment.
Should I show an Apple Watch tracing to my doctor?
Yes. Save or export a tracing recorded during symptoms and pair it with notes about how you felt. A clinician can decide whether it is interpretable and whether further testing is needed.
Can anxiety cause palpitations even if the watch looks normal?
Anxiety can be associated with a faster or more noticeable heartbeat, but similar sensations have other causes. Recurrent symptoms should not be assigned to anxiety without considering the wider clinical picture.
