Apple cider vinegar and food poisoning

Food poisoning often causes vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea, or fever. Care usually centres on replacing lost fluid and watching for signs of dehydration or a more serious illness.

Apple cider vinegar is acidic. Drinking it cannot reliably remove a toxin or infection once contaminated food has caused illness, and concentrated vinegar can irritate the mouth, throat, and stomach. It may be especially unpleasant when vomiting or abdominal pain is already present.

Symptoms can follow infection with different germs or exposure to toxins made in food. The appropriate response depends on the symptoms, their severity, relevant medical conditions, and whether the person can keep fluids down.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution. After vomiting settles, try bland foods in small amounts according to appetite. Rest, wash hands carefully, and avoid preparing food for other people while diarrhoea or vomiting continues.

Do not force vinegar, very acidic drinks, alcohol, or heavy meals. Before using medicine to stop diarrhoea, seek professional advice if there is fever, blood in the stool, severe pain, pregnancy, a long-term health condition, or illness in a young child or older adult.

Get urgent medical help for fainting, confusion, marked drowsiness, breathing difficulty, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or signs of severe dehydration such as very little urine, a very dry mouth, or inability to keep fluids down.

Arrange prompt assessment when symptoms are persistent or worsening, or when the affected person is pregnant, very young, older, immunocompromised, or living with significant kidney, heart, or metabolic disease.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration, whether oral rehydration is enough, and whether any current medicines should be adjusted while you are vomiting or losing fluid. Mention recent meals, travel, sick contacts, blood in stool, fever, urine output, and whether others who ate the same food became ill.
