Apple cider products and kidney stones

A formed stone's management depends on its size, location, composition and the symptoms it causes. A drink cannot replace pain control, urine testing, imaging or a procedure when one is needed.

Apple cider vinegar contains acid, but drinking it does not deliver that acid directly to a stone in the urinary tract. The digestive system processes what you consume, and urine chemistry is regulated by the kidneys and the rest of the body.

Undiluted vinegar can irritate the mouth, throat and stomach and can damage tooth enamel. It may also be unsuitable with certain medicines or health conditions. Sweetened apple cider adds sugar without addressing an obstructing stone.

Arrange clinical assessment for new flank pain, painful urination or blood in the urine. A clinician may check urine, kidney function and imaging, then advise whether watchful waiting, prescribed medicine or a procedure fits the particular stone.

Drink water regularly unless a clinician has restricted your fluid intake. Do not force large volumes during severe pain or vomiting. For prevention, recommendations vary by stone type, so saving a passed stone for analysis can make dietary advice more specific.

Seek urgent care for flank or abdominal pain with fever, chills, repeated vomiting or feeling severely unwell. A stone blocking infected urine can become dangerous and requires rapid treatment rather than a home drink.

Go promptly if you cannot pass urine, pain is uncontrolled, you feel faint or confused, or you have only one functioning kidney. Pregnancy, known kidney disease or worsening dehydration also lowers the threshold for immediate assessment.

Ask whether imaging is needed, what type and size of stone is suspected, and how to control pain and nausea. For prevention, discuss fluid goals, urine testing, dietary changes and whether apple cider vinegar could interact with your medicines or irritate another condition.
