What to know about APO-Misoprostol

Clinicians use misoprostol for different purposes, including some miscarriage care, preparation of the cervix, induction of labour and prevention of certain medicine-related stomach ulcers. The instructions are specific to the reason for treatment.

Misoprostol acts like a natural substance called prostaglandin. In reproductive care, it softens the cervix and stimulates uterine contractions. Cramping and vaginal bleeding may therefore be expected in some treatment plans, but the expected pattern differs by indication.

The medicine can also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, chills or a temporary fever. Whether these effects are expected, and how they should be managed, depends on the prescribed route, timing and clinical setting.

Use misoprostol only for the diagnosed reason and follow the prescriber's exact directions. Do not copy another person's schedule, change the route, repeat a dose or share tablets. Check the label and contact the dispensing pharmacy or clinic if the brand, strength or directions are unclear.

Before treatment, tell the clinician if you may be pregnant, have an ectopic pregnancy concern, use blood-thinning medicine, have a bleeding disorder, or previously had uterine surgery. Confirm what bleeding, pain and temperature changes are expected and save the clinic's after-hours contact details.

Follow the urgent-care thresholds supplied by your treating service. Seek immediate assessment for bleeding that is far heavier than the team said to expect, fainting, severe or worsening pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, or feeling acutely unwell.

Contact the treatment team promptly for a fever that persists, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, pain that is not controlled by the advised medicines, or concern that treatment has not progressed as explained. One-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain or collapse in a possible pregnancy requires emergency care because an ectopic pregnancy needs separate treatment.
