What to know about poly aluminium chloride

The Indonesian phrase “apa itu” means “what is.” Polyaluminium chloride, often written as poly aluminium chloride, describes a group of aluminium-based compounds used to help suspended material clump together during water treatment. It is not the same product as aluminium chloride formulated for excessive sweating. A dermatology antiperspirant has a defined concentration, vehicle and instructions for use on intact skin; an industrial chemical does not.

Aluminium chloride antiperspirants reduce sweating by forming temporary plugs near sweat-duct openings. Stronger formulations may be supplied as a prescription antiperspirant when ordinary products have not controlled symptoms. The product label and active ingredient matter more than a similar-sounding name.

Check that the package is a finished antiperspirant intended for human skin and that aluminium chloride is listed as the active ingredient. Do not use water-treatment powder, liquid from an industrial container or an unlabelled decanted product on the body. Follow the application directions, use only on dry, unbroken skin and keep it away from the eyes and mouth. Applying it soon after shaving can increase stinging.

If excessive sweating is disrupting clothing, work, sleep or daily activities, a dermatologist can confirm whether the pattern fits hyperhidrosis and select a suitable formulation. Bring the container or a clear photograph of its label if the ingredient name is uncertain.

Rinse the area and stop use if a product causes marked burning, swelling, blistering or a spreading rash. Seek urgent medical care after eye exposure that continues to hurt after rinsing, accidental swallowing, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or widespread hives. New sweating with fever, chest discomfort, faintness or unexplained weight change also needs medical assessment rather than repeated antiperspirant use.

Ask whether the label identifies a dermatology-grade aluminium chloride product, how it should be timed around washing or shaving, and what to use if irritation develops. You can also ask whether your sweating pattern suggests another cause and whether a prescription formulation is appropriate.
