What to know about mesotherapy

The term describes an injection method, not one standard formula. Products may differ between providers, so the identity, quality and intended purpose of every injected ingredient are central to an informed decision.

A practitioner cleans the treatment area and delivers multiple shallow injections. Mesotherapy may be marketed for skin hydration, texture or other appearance concerns, but the likely outcome and risks depend on the actual substance, injection depth, body site and practitioner's technique.

Temporary tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising or small bumps can follow needle entry. Less routine problems include infection, an inflammatory reaction, allergy, persistent nodules, pigment change or injury to nearby tissue.

Choose a licensed clinician working in an appropriate clinical setting. Request the product names, ingredients, source and reason for use, and make sure sterile, single-use needles and proper skin preparation are part of the procedure.

Disclose allergies, active rashes or infections, a history of cold sores or raised scars, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and medicines or supplements that affect bleeding or immunity. Follow the clinician's specific instructions about skincare, exercise, heat and touching the injected area afterward.

Contact the treating clinician promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, blistering, darkening skin or a lump that continues to enlarge. Early examination helps separate expected injection-site changes from infection or tissue injury.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, widespread hives, sudden severe pain, or pale or dusky skin beyond the injection points. Do not massage a concerning area unless a clinician specifically directs you.

Ask who will perform the injections, what training they hold, exactly what will be injected and what alternatives address your concern. Discuss expected visible changes, likely downtime, aftercare, management of complications and whether the planned product is intended for injection at that site.
