A digital otoscope combines a light and small camera, sending a magnified view to a phone or other compatible screen. It may show wax, the canal wall, discharge, a foreign object, or part of the eardrum. An image that looks red or cloudy is not specific enough to establish the cause of pain.

Wax, movement, camera angle, and image quality can hide important findings. Clinicians also use symptom history, examination of nearby structures, and sometimes hearing or pressure tests. A normal-looking home image therefore does not exclude infection, eardrum injury, or a problem behind the eardrum.

Read the model instructions, confirm device and app compatibility, wash your hands, and attach a clean protective tip. Seat the person securely in good light. Guide only the tip into the outer canal while watching both the ear and screen; stop if there is pain, resistance, sudden movement, coughing, or dizziness.

Do not use the camera to scrape wax or retrieve an object unless a clinician has specifically advised a safe method. Avoid inserting it into an ear with known eardrum perforation, recent surgery, active bleeding, or drainage until a clinician advises you. Clean the reusable parts exactly as the manufacturer directs and never share an unclean tip.

For a remote consultation, capture a steady overview before closer images and label which ear was viewed. Share the original file securely rather than relying on filters or colour enhancement.

Seek urgent assessment after a significant ear injury, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, bleeding that continues, or an object that may be sharp, a battery, or a magnet. Do not attempt removal with the otoscope.

Arrange a clinical examination for worsening pain, fever with illness, discharge, swelling around or behind the ear, new hearing difficulty, or symptoms that persist despite home care. Young children, people with reduced immunity, and anyone with previous ear surgery may need earlier assessment based on their symptoms.

Tell the clinician when symptoms began, which ear is affected, whether there is fever, discharge, dizziness, or hearing change, and what you inserted into the ear. Ask whether the images are adequate, whether an in-person ear examination is still needed, and whether wax should be left alone or removed professionally.
