When anxiety and depression occur together

Short answer
Persistent anxiety can contribute to depression, while depression can intensify worry, poor sleep, fatigue, and difficulty coping.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can anxiety lead to depression?
The conditions can occur together, but feeling low after a stressful day does not by itself establish depression. A clinician considers the pattern, persistence, effect on daily life, physical health, medicines, substance use, and other possible explanations before recommending care.
Recognising an overlapping pattern
Anxiety often centres on fear, tension, racing thoughts, or a sense of threat. Depression is more associated with persistent low mood, loss of interest or pleasure, hopelessness, reduced motivation, and withdrawal. Both may disturb sleep, drain energy, affect appetite, increase irritability, and make concentration harder.
Long-running worry can be exhausting and may narrow work, relationships, movement, or social contact. Those changes can reinforce low mood. The overlap is treatable, and identifying both parts helps a clinician choose support that does not leave a major symptom unaddressed.
Steps that support recovery
Book a primary-care or mental health appointment if worry or low mood is persistent, difficult to control, or disrupting sleep, study, work, relationships, or self-care. Before the visit, note when symptoms began, what has changed, current medicines, caffeine or substance use, and any previous mental health treatment.
Treatment may include talking therapy, medicine, or both, tailored to the person's symptoms and preferences. Regular waking times, manageable activity, reliable meals, reduced alcohol, and contact with supportive people can strengthen a treatment plan. If starting prescribed medicine, follow the agreed instructions and report troubling effects rather than stopping suddenly without clinical advice.
Get help urgently when safety is at risk
Seek immediate help if you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, feel unable to keep yourself safe, have made a plan, or are hearing or seeing things that others do not. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department, and tell a trusted person who can stay with you while help is arranged.
Prompt assessment is also needed if you cannot manage food, fluids, basic hygiene, or essential responsibilities, or if agitation and sleeplessness are rapidly worsening. Remove access to anything you might use for self-harm while another person contacts professional support.
Plan the clinical conversation
You might ask whether your symptoms fit anxiety, depression, or both; whether a physical condition or medicine needs checking; and which therapy approaches suit your main difficulties. Also clarify how prescribed treatment should be taken, which side effects need attention, when follow-up should occur, and who to contact if your safety worsens.

Questions people ask
Does having anxiety mean I will develop depression?
No. Anxiety can contribute to low mood and the conditions may overlap, but one does not make the other inevitable. Persistent symptoms and their daily impact need an individual assessment.
Can anxiety and depression be treated at the same time?
Yes. A coordinated plan may use talking therapy, medicine, practical routine changes, or a combination chosen for the symptoms, health history, and personal preferences.
What should I do if someone with anxiety becomes suicidal?
Treat it as an emergency. Stay with the person if you can do so safely, reduce access to means of self-harm, and contact local emergency services or take them to an emergency department.
