Anxiety and indigestion: what to know

Short answer
Anxiety can trigger or worsen indigestion by changing digestion, increasing muscle tension and making uncomfortable sensations feel more noticeable.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can anxiety cause indigestion?
Symptoms may include upper-abdominal discomfort, burning, fullness, bloating, belching or nausea. A flare during stress can support a connection, but it does not prove anxiety is the only cause.
What the anxiety–gut connection means
The brain and digestive tract communicate through nerves and chemical signals. During anxiety, this communication can alter stomach movement, affect appetite and heighten sensitivity to stretching or acid. Eating quickly, swallowing more air, disrupted sleep and caffeine use during stressful periods can add to discomfort.
Indigestion can also accompany acid reflux, gastritis, a peptic ulcer, gallstones, a hiatus hernia or Helicobacter pylori infection. Repeated symptoms deserve assessment rather than being automatically attributed to stress.
Ways to ease symptoms
Try smaller, slower meals and remain upright after eating. Notice whether spicy or fatty foods, caffeine, smoking or late meals reliably aggravate symptoms; a brief symptom-and-meal diary can reveal patterns without requiring broad food restrictions.
Slow breathing, regular movement and a consistent sleep routine may reduce the anxiety response that feeds a flare. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antacid or acid-reducing medicine suits your symptoms and other medicines. Avoid relying on repeated self-treatment when the cause is unclear.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical review if indigestion keeps returning, is getting worse, disrupts eating or sleep, or comes with persistent vomiting, trouble swallowing, unplanned weight loss, reduced appetite or signs of anaemia such as unusual tiredness or breathlessness.
Seek urgent care for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, severe or sudden abdominal pain, fainting, or chest pressure with sweating, breathlessness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw. Chest symptoms should not be assumed to be anxiety or indigestion.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether your symptom pattern suggests reflux or another digestive condition, whether any current medicine could be contributing, and whether testing for Helicobacter pylori is appropriate. Also discuss which short-term symptom treatment is suitable and what change should prompt follow-up.

Questions people ask
How can I tell whether anxiety is causing my indigestion?
Symptoms that appear or intensify during stress may suggest a connection, especially if they ease as anxiety settles. The timing alone cannot confirm the cause, so persistent, worsening or unexplained symptoms should be assessed.
Can treating anxiety improve indigestion?
Reducing anxiety may lessen digestive sensitivity and behaviours that aggravate symptoms, such as rushed meals or excess caffeine. Digestive symptoms may still need separate evaluation and treatment.
Should I take acid reflux medicine for anxiety-related indigestion?
Acid-reducing treatment can help some acid-related symptoms, but it does not treat every cause of indigestion. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before choosing a product, particularly if you take other medicines or symptoms keep returning.
