Short answer

Anxiety can make a racing heartbeat more noticeable, but palpitations triggered by standing may also reflect the body's response to posture or another condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Posture effect
Standing prompts the body to adjust circulation and heart rate.
Anxiety effect
Stress hormones and heightened awareness can intensify palpitations.
Fall prevention
Sit or lie down promptly when light-headed.

Why might the heart race on standing?

When you stand, gravity briefly shifts blood toward the legs. The nervous system normally responds by adjusting heart rate and blood-vessel tone. Dehydration, anaemia, low blood sugar, thyroid problems, medicines, or an abnormal rhythm can alter how this feels, while anxiety may intensify the response.

Clues in the symptom pattern

Notice whether the sensation occurs only after rising, also appears while resting, or follows heat, illness, missed meals, caffeine, or prolonged standing. Light-headedness, blurred vision, weakness, shakiness, breathlessness, chest discomfort, or fainting are important accompanying details.

A surge of fear can release stress hormones and cause a pounding or fast heartbeat. However, repeated posture-linked symptoms should not be labelled as anxiety without considering circulation, hydration, blood count, thyroid function, medicine effects, and heart rhythm.

Safer steps when standing

If you feel faint, sit or lie down promptly to avoid falling. Rise in stages from lying to sitting and then standing, pause before walking, and hold a stable surface if needed. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has restricted them, and avoid skipping meals.

Record when episodes happen, how long they last, what the heartbeat feels like, and any associated symptoms. Include recent illness, bleeding, medicine changes, supplements, caffeine, and energy drinks. A wearable reading may be useful context, but it cannot identify every rhythm or replace clinical assessment.

When palpitations need care

Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, marked weakness, or signs of stroke such as facial droop, arm weakness, or speech difficulty. Lie or sit safely while waiting and do not drive yourself.

Arrange medical review if episodes recur, begin after a medicine change, feel irregular, occur at rest, or interfere with normal activity. Prompt advice is also appropriate when there is ongoing dizziness, unusually heavy bleeding, black stools, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, or symptoms of thyroid overactivity such as heat intolerance and tremor.

What your clinician may need to know

Ask whether posture-related blood pressure and pulse checks, an electrical heart tracing, or blood tests are appropriate. Discuss hydration, recent bleeding or illness, family heart history, every medicine and supplement, and how anxiety symptoms relate in time to the racing heart.

Questions people ask

Does a racing heart on standing mean it is anxiety?

No. Anxiety may contribute, but posture-related circulation changes, dehydration, anaemia, thyroid problems, medicines, and rhythm disturbances are among the possibilities.

What details should I record about palpitations?

Note posture, activity, duration, whether the rhythm felt regular, and symptoms such as dizziness, breathlessness, chest discomfort, shaking, or fainting.

Can dehydration make the heart race when I stand?

Dehydration can present with a faster heartbeat and light-headedness, particularly on standing, because the circulating fluid volume is reduced.
