Ingrown hair near the anus

It develops when a cut or curled hair grows back into the skin, often after shaving, waxing, friction, or close trimming. Because cysts, inflamed follicles, boils, skin tags, and swollen blood vessels can occur nearby, avoid relying on appearance alone.

A small raised spot may feel itchy or sore and can have redness, a visible trapped hair, or a tiny pus-filled tip. Folliculitis presents with inflamed bumps centred on hair follicles and can accompany an ingrown hair.

A deeper lump, increasing pain, warmth, spreading redness, substantial drainage, or no visible relationship to a hair makes examination more useful. A clinician can inspect the exact location and decide whether the bump comes from skin, a follicle, or tissue around the anal opening.

Pause shaving and waxing, wash gently, pat dry, and apply a warm clean compress for comfort. Loose underwear and clothing can lessen friction. If the hair tip reaches the surface naturally, leave the skin intact rather than digging for it.

Do not squeeze, lance, or probe the bump with tweezers or a needle. Avoid strong exfoliating acids and fragranced products on this sensitive area, particularly if skin is broken. Repeated bumps may improve with a less-close trimming method; a dermatologist can discuss longer-term hair-removal options after inflammation has settled.

Get prompt care for fever, rapidly worsening pain, spreading redness, marked swelling, foul-smelling or heavy drainage, or difficulty sitting or passing stool. Book an examination if the bump does not settle, keeps returning, bleeds, becomes firm or ulcerated, or if you are unsure that it begins at a hair follicle.

Ask whether the bump is an ingrown hair, folliculitis, a boil, or another anal-area condition; whether medicine or drainage is appropriate; how long to avoid hair removal; which grooming method would reduce recurrence; and which symptoms require urgent reassessment.
