Skin growths around the anus

Possible explanations include a skin tag, blocked or inflamed gland, boil, cyst, wart, swollen blood vessel, or another skin lesion. An examination is the safest way to distinguish them because treatment differs by cause.

A clinician will consider whether the area is soft or firm, smooth or rough, skin-coloured or inflamed, and whether it is attached to the surface or feels deeper. Pain, itching, bleeding, discharge, rapid enlargement, bowel symptoms, and the timing of onset provide further clues.

A tender, hot lump containing pus may fit an infection such as a boil, while a painless tag-like projection can arise after local stretching or irritation. These patterns overlap, and a persistent sore, ulcer, or changing growth needs direct assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Seek prompt medical attention for severe or worsening pain, fever, spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, difficulty passing stool, or bleeding that is heavy or does not stop. Arrange a routine examination for any unexplained growth that persists, enlarges, repeatedly bleeds, changes colour or shape, develops an ulcer, or keeps returning.
