Antihistamines for a sore throat

They are most relevant when throat irritation occurs alongside sneezing, an itchy nose or eyes, and clear nasal discharge. Their drying effect can sometimes make a dry throat feel more uncomfortable.

Allergic rhinitis can present with an itchy throat when allergens irritate the upper airway or nasal mucus drains backward. Infection more often brings painful swallowing and may occur with fever, swollen neck glands, cough, or general illness. Reflux, smoke, dry air, and voice strain are other possible causes, and an antihistamine does not address them.

Throat symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause. A medicine that eases itching does not confirm allergy, and partial relief should not delay assessment of concerning symptoms.

If the pattern clearly fits allergy, take the antihistamine according to its label and monitor for drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, or urinary difficulty. Check cough, cold, and nighttime remedies so you do not take the same ingredient twice. A pharmacist can advise on suitability for children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, glaucoma, or other medicines.

Drink enough fluid, avoid smoke, and consider soothing warm or cool drinks according to preference. If a blocked nose leads to mouth breathing, treating the nasal inflammation appropriately may reduce overnight throat dryness more effectively than adding another antihistamine.

Call for urgent help if breathing is difficult, the tongue or throat is swelling, you cannot swallow saliva, you are drooling, your voice becomes muffled, or symptoms worsen quickly. Prompt assessment is also needed for severe dehydration, a stiff or swollen neck, a spreading rash with marked illness, or severe one-sided throat pain. Arrange a routine review if soreness persists, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by unexplained hoarseness.

Explain whether the discomfort is itchy, dry, burning, or painful to swallow and list accompanying nasal, eye, fever, reflux, or breathing symptoms. Ask whether allergy is a plausible cause and whether a local nasal treatment would be more suitable than an oral antihistamine.
