Hay fever is seasonal allergic rhinitis. It often presents with bouts of sneezing, a watery nose, itching in the nose or throat, and red or watery eyes after pollen exposure. Congestion is driven by swollen nasal tissue as well as histamine, which is why an antihistamine alone may leave a blocked nose.

Older sedating antihistamines can impair concentration and reaction time. Newer options are less likely to cause sleepiness, although individual responses differ and alcohol can make drowsiness worse.

If symptoms follow a predictable pollen exposure, taking the medicine before exposure may help prevent them from building. Do not combine different antihistamines unless a clinician advises it, and inspect combination cold remedies for duplicate ingredients.

Reduce pollen contact by keeping outdoor clothes away from the bedroom, showering after heavy exposure, and closing windows when pollen is troublesome. Persistent nasal blockage may need a different type of nasal treatment; a pharmacist or doctor can explain correct spray technique.

Book a consultation if symptoms disrupt sleep or daily activities, remain troublesome despite correct treatment, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Get urgent help for wheezing with difficulty breathing, rapidly worsening breathlessness, faintness, or swelling of the mouth, tongue, or throat. Eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced vision, or thick discharge also requires prompt assessment rather than assuming hay fever is responsible.
