Antifungal medicine for ringworm

The treatment form depends on the body site, extent of infection, age, other health conditions, and response to previous care. Ringworm of the scalp or nails needs a different approach from a small patch on ordinary skin.

Ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm. On the body it often presents with an enlarging scaly rash whose edge may be more raised or active than the centre. Appearance varies, and eczema, psoriasis, and other rashes can look similar.

Creams, gels, sprays, or solutions place an antifungal directly on affected skin. Oral medicine reaches infection through the bloodstream and may be considered when several areas are involved, the infection is deep, a topical course has not worked, or the affected site is difficult to treat from the surface.

Wash and dry the area gently before applying a topical product, then cover the affected skin and the margin specified in its instructions. Wash your hands afterward unless they are the area being treated. Continue for the directed course rather than stopping when the visible edge first fades.

Keep the area dry, change damp clothing, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, bedding, or grooming tools. Do not use a steroid cream on an undiagnosed ring-shaped rash unless a clinician recommends it; steroids can alter the appearance and allow fungal infection to spread.

Book an assessment if the rash involves the scalp, beard area, or nails; covers a large area; keeps spreading during correct treatment; or returns soon afterward. Earlier advice is sensible for a young infant or someone with weakened immune defences, diabetes, or poor circulation.

Obtain prompt care if the skin becomes very painful, hot, swollen, or drains pus, or if fever accompanies the rash. Stop a new medicine and seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, or a rapidly worsening blistering reaction.

Ask whether the rash needs testing, which formulation suits its location, and how to judge whether treatment is working. Before oral therapy, share details of liver disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, and all medicines and supplements so interactions and monitoring needs can be considered.
