Antifungal treatment for diaper rash

A pharmacist or clinician can help distinguish a likely yeast rash from irritation caused by prolonged moisture, friction, stool, wipes or another skin disorder. Use only a preparation suitable for the child's age and diaper area.

Yeast-related diaper dermatitis often involves the warm skin folds and can produce a bright red area with smaller spots around its edges. Simple irritant rash more often affects exposed surfaces that contact the diaper while sparing deeper creases. Appearance alone is not always enough to separate them.

An antifungal targets yeast; it does not replace frequent diaper changes or protection from moisture. Antibiotic use, ongoing diarrhoea or a rash that has remained damp may make yeast involvement more plausible, but a clinician should assess an unclear or persistent eruption.

Clean the area gently with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free product, pat it dry and allow brief diaper-free time when practical. Apply the antifungal in a thin layer exactly as directed. Wash your hands before and after application.

Change wet or soiled diapers promptly and avoid vigorous rubbing. A recommended barrier or emollient can shield inflamed skin, but check how to layer it with the medicine. Do not use an adult antifungal, steroid combination or powder on a baby without professional guidance.

Contact a clinician if the child is very young, the rash is worsening, treatment is not helping, or you are unsure whether yeast is present. Blisters, open sores, pus, spreading redness, marked pain, fever, unusual sleepiness or poor feeding need prompt assessment.

Get urgent help if the child develops breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or tongue after a medicine. Remove the suspected product from further use until a clinician advises otherwise.

Describe when the rash started, whether it reaches the folds, recent diarrhoea or antibiotics, and every cream or wipe already tried. Ask which medicine is age-appropriate, how it should be layered with a barrier, and when improvement should trigger reassessment rather than continued self-care.
