Antifungal and antibiotic medicines for skin infections

These medicines are not interchangeable. A cream, lotion, tablet or capsule may be appropriate depending on the cause, location, severity and extent of the infection.

The phrase “antifungal antibiotic” can cause confusion. Antifungal medicines act against fungi, including the organisms that cause ringworm, athlete’s foot and some yeast infections. Antibiotics act against bacteria and may be used for infections such as cellulitis. Neither type treats every rash.

Fungal rashes can be scaly, ring-shaped or itchy, but eczema, contact reactions and bacterial infections can look similar. A clinician may examine the pattern and site, ask how it developed, and sometimes take a skin scraping or swab before recommending treatment.

Use the medicine exactly as directed and check whether it is intended for the skin, scalp, nails or mouth. Wash and dry your hands before and after applying a topical product, avoid sharing towels, and keep the affected area clean and dry where practical.

Do not use leftover antibiotics or combine creams unless a clinician or pharmacist has confirmed the combination. Steroid-containing creams can change the appearance of an infection and may allow some fungal infections to spread. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, liver problems and other medicines before taking an oral treatment.

Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returns, involves the face, scalp or nails, produces pus, or does not improve with the recommended course. People with diabetes, reduced immunity or poor circulation should seek advice early because skin infections may need closer monitoring.

Seek urgent care for rapidly expanding redness, severe pain, marked swelling, blistering, fever, confusion, red streaks moving up a limb, or swelling of the lips or tongue after a medicine. These signs can indicate a deeper infection or a serious allergic reaction.

Ask what type of infection is suspected, whether a sample is needed, where and how often to apply the medicine, and which changes should prompt reassessment. Confirm whether household members, footwear, towels or pets could contribute to reinfection and need attention.
