Antibody tests for hepatitis B

Clinicians often interpret antibodies alongside hepatitis B surface antigen and sometimes viral tests. A positive antibody result therefore does not, by itself, confirm an active infection.

Surface antibody, commonly written as anti-HBs, can reflect protection after vaccination or recovery from infection. Core antibody, or anti-HBc, points to exposure to the virus and is not produced by vaccination alone.

The combination matters: surface antigen suggests current infection, while antibody patterns help distinguish vaccination, past infection and results that need clarification. The laboratory report, reason for testing and previous records all shape interpretation.

Review the exact marker names with the clinician who requested the test. Bring vaccination records and older blood results, and mention pregnancy, immune-suppressing treatment, dialysis, liver disease or a recent possible exposure.

Depending on the pattern, the next step may be no action, vaccination, another blood sample, liver tests or a test for the virus itself. Until an uncertain result is clarified, avoid sharing razors or toothbrushes and cover open cuts.

Arrange prompt medical assessment after a recent blood or sexual exposure, particularly if no vaccination record is available, because time-sensitive preventive care may be considered.

Seek urgent care for yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness or confusion. Hepatitis B can present with fatigue and dark urine, but symptoms cannot determine the antibody pattern.

Useful questions include which hepatitis B markers were tested, whether the pattern indicates vaccination or previous exposure, whether active infection has been excluded, and whether household or sexual contacts need vaccination advice.
